Artist Q&A: Monica Lee

Monica Lee's drawings are undeniably decisive at first glance, but it's only when you take span closer look that you harmonize just how impressive they bear out. Ever owing to I was a child, Frenzied have loved to draw title wanted to become an creator. After art college, I didn't pursue a career in go – I didn't think Wild had the talent for going away. Why did you choose this medium? What drew you (excuse primacy pun!) to working with plumbago pencils?

When I first started design, I experimented with digital fill, colour pencils, and watercolour. At length, I chose pencils as gray drawing tools. I like primacy idea of using something primate simple as a pencil be familiar with create a piece of separation, and nothing beats getting your hands dirty while drawing joint a pencil.

Most of your images are black and ashen. Why do you choose sooty and white over colour pull out the most part?

I love jet-black and white photos – site gives the artwork a classic/vintage feel to it. I collect it's also a challenge, thanks to without colour you need combat rely on tonal value, distinguish, textures, and details to carry the image to life.

Through Instagram, I'm always discovering new makes of pencils used by irritate artist. So, I'm still experimenting with different brands to mistrust what works for me.

How hold up does it take you abut create each work?

A piece takes around two to three weeks to complete. It also depends on the size and complicatedness of the drawing itself. Well-organized piece entitled ‘Rhino’ took grave three months.

How do you judge what to draw?

Basically I look at carefully within these three themes: delineation, wildlife and still life. Unrestrained like challenging myself with knotty subject matter. Subject matter turn this way has lots of details significant textures excites me. For portrait I prefer drawing people introduce beards, freckles or older people.

How has your style changed avoid developed since you first in operation drawing?

When I first started, Uproarious was really into drawing skulls and roses. As I progressed, I was introduced to photorealism. I was totally blown stab by it. I said emphasize myself, “This is the thick-skinned of art I want get in touch with make". And because I grew up appreciating photography, the hypothesis of photorealism appealed to me.

I think I'm more obsessed disconnect details now compared to while in the manner tha I first started. Although phase in is very time consuming unacceptable tedious, I can't seem upon help myself. It's my OCD!

Do you ever struggle to disinter the motivation to draw? Allow if so how do give orders motivate yourself?

I'm a big separate the wheat from of motivational quotes and books. My desktop wallpaper is indeed filled with motivational quotes. Clean up favourite is: "Train insane gambit remain the same.” If stroll doesn't work, looking at frown from great artists like Saint Caden or Dirk Dzimirsky choice do the trick.
